Upping Mileage with Only a Sports Bra

On Thursday, I went for an extremely hot run. It was about 96 out and I made it just under 3 miles (what I planned). I am a very self conscience person and I don't have the "perfect" body. I'm fine with that! When I got back to my car, the first thing I did (before drinking more water), was take off my tank (I had a sports bra on underneath). I'm not sure if I have the self confidence to run in only a sports bra.

I started a conversation on Twitter about this. How do you feel about people (men and women) running in the heat with the least amount of clothing (not to get the cops attention) possible? I think I may try it tonight when I go for my next hot run.

In other news, I'm going to be upping my mileage. I finally feel the urge to run more, even if it is in the heat. I need to be outside as much as possible. I love the outdoors, and I'm starting to not hate braving the heat for a run (I'm still a baby for other heat related outings).

Right now, I'm only running about 9 miles per week, not even double digits. I think I will alternate the gym on Mondays and Wednesdays (ripped vs. spin classes) and run outdoors Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, for a little longer than I have been.

Any special, cooling tricks to running out in the heat? I'm already filling my handheld a little and freezing it during the day and filling the rest when I leave for my run. I know about hats and sun block. Anything else that I'm not aware of?

  1. I barely notice anymore. There are women at my gym who rock the sports-bra-only thing and I love their confidence. I'm not quite there yet.

When it's 96 out, you have to do what you can to stay cool. I just avoid the midday running on days like that and run as early or late as possible.

  2. I cannot fathom running in that temp! Yikes! I couldn't care less what anyone wears or doesn't wear. I've never run in a sports bra mostly because I think it attracts attention I don't want. I get car horns and whistles when I wear a running skirt...not that I'm so hot or anything, but I'd rather not have that attention.

  3. I go back and forth on the issue, sometimes I feel like chicks do it solely to get attention and other times I completely understand why you'd want to do it. If it's really effing hot I'll run shirtless but I'd never do it at a race. I think it's a personal preference/confidence thing in the end.

  4. I run in just a sports bra for about 9 months of the year now (I live in Aus and it's very hot!) I also race like that, it's so much more comfortable.

  5. My sister and I think women should have a sporty racerback option that is comfortable to wear alone, that shapes women, gives some lift, and hopefully helps to make them feel confident, so we developed the Ultimate Support Sports Bra. Our work on developing good sports bras for women in some larger cup sizes is simply for this reason--many high-impact sports bras for C, D or DD look like bulletproof vests! If you're more self conscious we have the same high-impact support in a tank top--just wanted to share!
